Adventure Sports in Saudi Arabia

trust.lastUpdated 15 مارس 2026

From the 300-metre canyon walls of Wadi Disah to the Red Sea coast and the Empty Quarter's 200-metre dunes, Saudi Arabia's terrain covers climbing, paragliding above the Asir Mountains, sandboarding, and kite surfing — mostly in single-trip distance from Riyadh or Jeddah.

Rock Climbing

Saudi Arabia's sandstone and granite formations support trad, sport, and multi-pitch routes. The Hail region has pillars and arches in the Jubbah area, while Tabuk's Wadi Disah (often called the Grand Canyon of Saudi Arabia) has canyon walls up to 300 meters high. AlUla's softer sandstone is better suited to bouldering. Local clubs in Riyadh and Jeddah organise regular weekend trips; most climbers bring their own rack.

Difficulty: Moderate to Advanced

Paragliding

The Asir Mountains near Abha provide ideal conditions for paragliding, with reliable thermal currents and launch elevations above 2,500 meters. The Asir region's green terraced hillsides and cloud forests create spectacular aerial scenery. Tandem flights are available for beginners through licensed operators, typically running from September to April when conditions are optimal.

Difficulty: Beginner (tandem) to Advanced (solo)

Sandboarding

The vast dune fields of the Empty Quarter (Rub' al Khali) and the red sands south of Riyadh offer prime sandboarding terrain. Dunes can reach heights of over 200 meters in the Empty Quarter. Many desert safari operators include sandboarding as part of their packages. The best dunes for beginners are found in the Al-Thumamah area, about 80 km north of Riyadh.

Difficulty: Beginner to Intermediate

Kite Surfing

The Red Sea coast, particularly around KAUST (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology) near Thuwal and Umluj further north, offers consistent winds and warm, flat water ideal for kite surfing. The season runs year-round, with the strongest and most reliable winds from May to September. The coastline is uncrowded, giving kiters plenty of space.

Difficulty: Intermediate to Advanced

Camel Racing & Falconry

While not sports you can easily participate in, camel racing and falconry are deeply rooted in Saudi heritage and spectacular to witness. The King Abdulaziz Camel Festival, held annually near Riyadh, features races, beauty contests, and cultural events. Falconry demonstrations can be experienced through desert camps and during the Saudi Falcons Club events. Both traditions are recognized by UNESCO.
