Best Time to Visit

Umrah can be performed year-round, with the cooler months of November to February offering the most comfortable weather (20-30 degrees). Ramadan is the most spiritually significant time for Umrah but also the most crowded. Hajj follows the Islamic lunar calendar and shifts approximately 11 days earlier each year. The months immediately before and after Hajj season tend to be less crowded for Umrah. Summer months (June-August) bring extreme heat above 45 degrees — plan outdoor movement for early morning or late evening.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can non-Muslims visit Makkah?
No. Entry to Makkah is strictly restricted to Muslims only. This is enforced at checkpoints on all roads into the city. Non-Muslim visitors should plan to visit other Saudi destinations instead.
What is the difference between Hajj and Umrah?
Hajj is the annual Islamic pilgrimage that takes place during the month of Dhul Hijjah and is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, obligatory once in a lifetime for able Muslims. Umrah is a lesser pilgrimage that can be performed at any time of year and takes 2-4 hours to complete.
How do I get a Hajj or Umrah visa?
Umrah visas can be obtained through the Nusuk platform or authorized travel agents. Hajj requires booking through licensed Hajj operators who arrange the complete package including visa, accommodation, and transport. Saudi residents can obtain permits through the Nusuk or Tawakkalna apps.
What should I pack for Makkah?
Comfortable walking shoes (you will walk 10-15km daily), Ihram garments for Hajj/Umrah, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, portable prayer mat, and modest clothing. The Grand Mosque is air-conditioned but outdoor areas are extremely hot in summer.
How crowded does Makkah get?
During Hajj, the city hosts 2-3 million additional pilgrims. Ramadan is also very busy. The least crowded times for Umrah are the months of Rajab and Shaban (before Ramadan) and Muharram (after Hajj season). Early morning hours (3-5 AM) offer the least crowded Tawaf experience year-round.
