Saudia and flynas run direct services from Riyadh to AlUla International (ULH) in a little over an hour, with connections from Jeddah; the road from Riyadh takes roughly ten hours and only makes sense as part of a wider drive. Book flights early in the October-to-March window - the aircraft are small and festival weekends fill months ahead.

On the ground, a rental car is the most reliable option; agencies operate at the airport, and the drive between the Old Town, Ashar Valley and the viewpoints is straightforward tarmac. Hegra: How the Ticket Actually Works

Hegra is not a site you drive into. Private vehicles are barred inside the archaeological area to protect the sandstone, so every visit is a timed, guided one booked in advance through Experience AlUla. You arrive at the stated meeting point and transfer to official transport.

The site holds more than 100 monumental rock-cut tombs. Eating in AlUla

Maraya Social sits on the roof of the Maraya concert hall, the mirror-clad building in Ashar Valley, and serves European shared plates with a full view of the valley at sunset. Okto, above the Harrat viewpoint, is Greek and books out for the same reason - reserve rather than turn up.

Suhail in the Old Town is the place for Saudi cooking done properly: jareesh, kabsa, lamb sambousek. Somewhere, in the AlJadidah district, sits inside a working farm under palms and does modern Middle Eastern food in a more relaxed register. For coffee and pastries between sites, the cafes clustered around AlJadidah and the citrus groves near the Old Town open from breakfast.

Festivals and the AlUla Moments Season

AlUla concentrates its events in the cool months under the AlUla Moments banner. Winter at Tantora, the flagship, runs 17 December 2026 to 9 January 2027 in its next edition, with concerts at Maraya, Old Town programming and citrus-harvest events. Around it the season carries an archaeology-focused festival in late autumn, a contemporary art programme including Desert X AlUla in the new year, a spring ballooning and astronomy week, and a desert polo weekend.

Adventure, Wellness and Dark Skies

The adventure hub in the valley runs a giant swing that drops riders from a canyon wall, a suspended stairway leading to a zipline, and via ferrata routes; prices sit in the low hundreds of riyals per person and slots are booked through Experience AlUla like everything else. Marked hikes such as the Hidden Valley route are short but exposed, and guided walks with local operators are the sensible way to do them in anything but winter.

Both flagship resorts run spas - Banyan Tree with Asian therapies, Habitas with a treatment list built around local moringa and date oils - and both open yoga sessions to non-residents at times.

The Gharameel area, an hour out of town, is the stargazing site.
