Kabsa & Rice Traditions

The soul of Saudi cuisine — slow-cooked basmati with aromatic spices, saffron, dried fruits and tender lamb or chicken. Each region has its own variation: Al-Bukhari in the Hejaz, Mandi in the south, Margoog in the Gulf coast.

Kabsa is served communally on large platters — eating with the right hand from a shared dish is the traditional and preferred way.

Street Food & Souks

Shawarma, foul medames, samboosa and mutabbaq fill the alleyways of Jeddah's Al-Balad, Riyadh's Al-Dira, and every roadside truck stop across the Kingdom. Saudi street food is honest, cheap and addictively good.

Al-Balad in Jeddah (UNESCO heritage district) has the Kingdom's most concentrated street food scene — visit after sunset when it comes alive.

Arabic Coffee Culture (Qahwa)

Saudi qahwa — lightly roasted coffee ground with cardamom, cloves, and saffron — is the cornerstone of Saudi hospitality. Refusing a cup is considered impolite; accepting three cups and shaking your empty cup signals you've had enough.

The UNESCO-listed Arabic coffee tradition is inseparable from Saudi social life. The dallah (copper pot) is a national symbol.

Red Sea Seafood

Fresh catches from the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf — grilled hamour, shrimp machboos, and whole-fried zubaidi. Jeddah's Corniche restaurants and the fish souks of Yanbu serve the freshest seafood in the country, landed the same morning.

Jeddah's Al-Shati district has Saudi Arabia's most sophisticated seafood restaurant scene — both traditional and international preparations.

Dates & Arabian Sweets

Saudi Arabia is the world's third-largest date producer — over 400 varieties are cultivated, from the creamy Sukkari of Al-Qassim to the caramel Medjool of Al-Ula. Paired with Arabic coffee, they are the kingdom's most iconic taste pairing.

The date markets of Al-Qassim (Buraydah Date Festival, August) are the world's largest date marketplace, attracting buyers from 60 countries.

Fine Dining & New Saudi Cuisine

Riyadh and Jeddah now host internationally recognised restaurants reinterpreting Saudi food through a modern lens. Chefs are creating a New Saudi Cuisine movement — traditional flavours with contemporary technique.

Tatel Riyadh, Nusr-Et, and Bukhara represent the international end; Morimoto Riyadh and Lume Jeddah lead the fine-dining conversation.

Gahwa Ceremony at a Desert Camp

The Arabic coffee ceremony (Gahwa) performed by a Bedouin host is one of Saudi Arabia's most intimate cultural experiences. A guide pours three small cups — accept all three with your right hand, then gently shake the empty cup when done.
