The seasonal-schedule trap

This is the single most common planning error we see. AlUla's air services run a handful of times a week per route, and the pattern changes between the summer and winter timetables.

To give a sense of the shape: on the summer 2026 timetable published by Experience AlUla — covering 29 March to 24 October 2026 — Saudia listed four flights a week from Riyadh (Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday) and flynas three (Sunday, Monday, Friday); Saudia listed three a week from Jeddah, flynas two from Dammam, flydubai four from Dubai and Qatar Airways two from Doha, with an exception in May.

AlUla's actual high season is October to April, so most visitors will be travelling on the winter schedule rather than that one. Treat the summer pattern as an illustration of frequency, not as your timetable, and check the airline directly.

The consequence for planning is the same either way: work out which days flights exist, then build the itinerary around them. A two-night stay that does not line up with the flight days becomes a three-night stay, or a very long drive.

From the airport into AlUla

Your realistic options:

Hotel transfer. Arrange it when you book. Almost every property in the valley offers one, and on a late arrival it is the only option you can rely on.
Rental car. Several companies operate locally, including Budget, Lumi, Al Wefaq and AlUla-based operators. If you want to see Hegra, Elephant Rock and the Old Town on your own schedule, this is the flexible choice.
Taxi. Possible, but the official line is that a limited number of taxis operate on a first-come, first-served basis. On a full evening flight that is a queue, not a plan.

Do not assume you can sort this out on arrival. It is the one booking that costs nothing to make in advance and a great deal of standing around to skip.

By road

Four approaches, in ascending order of pain:

From Medina: roughly 330 km, quoted at three to four hours. The shortest and most-used drive, and a genuine alternative to flying if you are already in the Hejaz. Medina's airport has far more international connections than AlUla's.
From Tabuk: roughly three to four hours, through the north-western desert.
From Jeddah: around 700 km, seven to eight hours. Long but doable in a day, and the standard leg of a Hejaz road trip.

Wherever you drive from, fuel stations thin out on the last stretch into the valley. Fill up at the last major town rather than the next sign.

Coming from outside Saudi Arabia

There is no long-haul service to AlUla, so every international visitor connects somewhere. Three patterns cover almost everyone:

Via Riyadh. The most frequent domestic link and the easiest to combine with a few days in the capital. Best if AlUla is one stop in a wider Saudi trip.
Via Jeddah. Shorter in the air, and the obvious choice if the Red Sea coast or Al-Balad is also on your list. Jeddah's international network is strong from Europe and Africa.
Via Dubai or Doha. The shortest total journey from most of Europe and Asia — one long-haul leg, one short hop, no domestic transfer inside Saudi Arabia. flydubai and Qatar Airways both fly the last leg themselves, so the whole itinerary can sit on one ticket.

A fourth route is worth knowing: fly into Medina and drive. Medina's airport has far broader international service than AlUla's, and the road south is the shortest of all the drives. For travellers from markets with no convenient AlUla connection, it is often the fastest door-to-door option.

Whichever you choose, most visitors need a tourist eVisa, applied for online before travel. Sort it before booking anything non-refundable.

The arrival logic that makes a two-night stay work

AlUla rewards arriving early in the day and leaving late, because the sites run on capped, timed entry and the good slots go first.

A morning arrival means you can take an afternoon slot at the Old Town or the oasis on day zero, leaving both full days clear for Hegra, Dadan and Jabal Ikmah. An evening arrival costs you that half day, and on a two-night stay that is a third of your time.

AlUla is a valley, not a town, and the distances inside it surprise people. Hegra is around 20 km north of the Old Town; Elephant Rock is off in another direction again.
