If you get one month to see Saudi Arabia, take December. The interior sits in the low twenties by day, the Red Sea is still warm enough to swim, and the country's two biggest cultural events open in the same week. The catch is that everyone else has worked this out too.

December weather, region by region

Saudi Arabia is not one climate. In December the spread between the Red Sea coast and the northern desert is around 10°C by day and more than 15°C at night, and that difference should drive your packing and your route.

• Riyadh and the centre: approx. 9–22°C. Bright, dry, ideal for walking. Evenings need a jacket.
• Jeddah and the Red Sea coast: approx. 20–31°C. Warm rather than hot; the only part of the country where December feels like summer elsewhere.
• AlUla and the north-west: approx. 5–21°C. The best sightseeing weather in the Kingdom, and genuinely cold after dark.
• Tabuk and the far north: approx. 6–20°C. The coldest inhabited corner; frost is not unheard of at altitude.
• Medina: approx. 14–26°C. Mild, and the gentlest of the inland options.
• Abha and Asir: approx. 8–21°C. Mountain weather — cool, sometimes misty, occasionally wet.
• Dammam and the Gulf coast: approx. 12–23°C. Comfortable, with more humidity than Riyadh.

The number that catches people out is the overnight one. AlUla averages around 5°C after dark and desert camps run colder than the town figure. A fleece is not enough; bring the jacket you would wear at home in November.

MDLBeast Soundstorm — 3–4 December, Banban, Riyadh

Red Sea International Film Festival — 3–12 December, Al-Balad, Jeddah

The sixth edition of the Gulf's most significant film festival, staged inside Jeddah's UNESCO-listed old town. Public screening tickets are released after the programme is announced in November, which means booking the dates before you know the films. What else runs in December

• Winter at Tantora, AlUla — opens 19 December 2026 and runs into January. AlUla's flagship winter festival, and the reason the valley's hotels are at their tightest in late December.
• Riyadh Season — the capital's umbrella entertainment programme has opened every October since 2019 and typically runs into the new year, so it is a reasonable bet to be under way in December 2026 too - but the 2026/27 season's exact dates were not yet officially published as of 30 August 2026. One thing December 2026 does not have: any religious-calendar constraint. Ramadan 2026 falls in February and March, so opening hours, dining and daytime sightseeing run normally throughout the month.

Three routes that work in December

1. The winter desert route — AlUla and the north-west

December is the month AlUla was made for: 21°C at Hegra by day, cold clear nights for stargazing, and the balloon flights that only make sense in stable winter air. Two nights is the minimum, three is better, and if your dates fall after the 19th you are in Winter at Tantora territory, which is spectacular and expensive in equal measure. 2. The Red Sea route — Jeddah, Yanbu and the coast

The only December route where you swim. Jeddah as a base for Al-Balad and the film festival, then north to Yanbu or Umluj for reef diving in 26°C water and empty beaches. This is also the route that suits travellers who dislike cold nights: the coast stays around 20°C after dark.

3. The capital route — Riyadh, Diriyah and the central desert

Riyadh in December is at its best: dry, bright, and cool enough for a full day on foot in Diriyah's restored mudbrick quarter or out at Edge of the World. Add Soundstorm if your dates land on the 3rd and 4th; Riyadh Season usually fills the evenings on top, though its 2026/27 dates were still unconfirmed at the time of writing.

A ten-day December shape

If you are coming a long way and want the month at its fullest, this is the sequence that works without doubling back:

• Days 1–3, Riyadh. Land, adjust, and take Diriyah and the National Museum by day. If your dates are the 3rd and 4th, Soundstorm takes both evenings.
• Days 4–6, AlUla. Fly north. One full day for Hegra and the northern sites, one for the Old Town, the oasis and Jabal Ikmah. Cold nights, clear skies, the best stargazing of the trip.
• Days 7–10, Jeddah and the coast. Fly south-west. Al-Balad on foot, the Corniche at sunset, and either film-festival screenings or a day north to Yanbu for the reef, depending on your dates.

That covers the interior, the desert north-west and the Red Sea in ten days with two domestic flights and no backtracking. Trim it to seven by cutting the coast to two nights; extend it to two weeks by adding Asir in the south or the Eastern Province.

What December is not good for

Two honest caveats.

The mountains are cold and can be wet. Abha and the Asir highlands are beautiful in December but they are not a winter-sun destination — expect 8°C mornings, mist, and the occasional washed-out day. Go for the landscape and the villages, not for the weather.

Daylight is short. Sunset across most of the country falls between about 5pm and 5.30pm in December. That is fine for cities and awkward for long drives and multi-site days — it removes roughly three hours of usable sightseeing compared with April. Front-load your days.

Prices, crowds and booking

December is peak season, and the first ten days are the peak of the peak: Soundstorm and the film festival overlap with the start of the high season across the whole country. Late December adds Winter at Tantora and the international holiday period on top.

The practical consequences: book accommodation in Riyadh, Jeddah and AlUla well ahead rather than optimistically; expect domestic flights on the Riyadh–AlUla and Riyadh–Jeddah routes to fill; and book capped, timed-entry sites — Hegra above all — before you book anything else. The quietest window in the month is roughly 13–18 December, between the film festival closing and Winter at Tantora opening. If your dates are flexible and you are not chasing an event, that is where the value is.

What to pack

• A proper jacket for evenings inland — this is the single most commonly under-packed item.
• Layers rather than one warm thing: 22°C at noon and 6°C at night is a 16-degree swing.
• Modest clothing for public spaces. Abayas and headscarves are not legally required for visiting women; covered shoulders and knees is the working norm.
• Swimwear if the Red Sea is on the route — the water is warmer than the air in some places.
• Sun protection regardless. Low sun is still strong sun.
