Domestic Flights

Flying is the fastest way to cover Saudi Arabia's vast distances. Domestic flights are affordable, frequent, and connect all major cities.

Tip: Book low-cost carriers 2-4 weeks in advance for the best fares. Riyadh to Jeddah flights can cost as little as 150-300 SAR ($40-80 USD) one way.

Trains (SAR & Haramain High-Speed)

Saudi Arabia's rail network is expanding rapidly. The Haramain High-Speed Railway is world-class and a highlight of any trip.

Haramain High-Speed Railway

Route: Makkah — Madinah (via Jeddah & KAEC)
Speed: 300 km/h | Journey time: ~2 hours

SAR North Line

Route: Riyadh — Qassim — Hail — Al Jouf
Speed: 200 km/h | Journey time: ~6 hours (full route)

SAR East Line

Route: Riyadh — Dammam/Hofuf
Speed: 200 km/h | Journey time: ~3.5 hours

Book tickets via the SAR or Haramain apps. Business class offers spacious seating and onboard meals. Economy is comfortable and well-priced.

Metro & Public Transit

Riyadh Metro

One of the largest urban transit projects in the world. Six lines covering 176 km with 85 stations. Connects King Khalid International Airport to the city center, Diriyah, and major landmarks. Uses a contactless smart card system.

Jeddah Public Transit

Bus rapid transit (BRT) system serves major corridors. A metro system is planned as part of Jeddah's urban development. Currently, ride-hailing apps are the most convenient option for visitors.

Makkah Metro (Mashair Railway)

Operates during Hajj season to transport pilgrims between Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah. Not available for general public use outside Hajj.

Car Rental & Ride-Hailing Apps

Car Rental

  • International licenses are accepted for up to 3 months.
  • Major brands (Hertz, Avis, Budget) operate at all airports.
  • Local companies like Yelo and Lumi often offer better rates.
  • Fuel is very cheap — approximately 2.18 SAR/liter ($0.58 USD) for 91 octane.
  • Roads are excellent between major cities. GPS/navigation apps work well.
  • Driving is on the right side of the road.

Ride-Hailing Apps

  • Careem: The regional leader, widely used across all cities. Offers economy, business, and MAX tiers.
  • Uber: Available in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, and other major cities.
  • Both apps accept credit cards — no cash needed.
  • During prayer times, some drivers may pause; wait times increase slightly.
  • Airport pickup zones are clearly marked for ride-hailing.

Practical Tips

  • Google Maps and Waze both work well in Saudi Arabia for navigation.
  • Speed cameras are common — respect posted limits (typically 120 km/h on highways).
  • Friday is the main day off — expect lighter traffic in business districts but heavier traffic near malls.
  • During Ramadan, traffic peaks before iftar (sunset) — plan accordingly.
  • Long-distance intercity buses (SAPTCO) are an affordable alternative for budget travelers.

Can I use my international driver's license in Saudi Arabia?

Yes. An international driving permit (IDP) paired with your home country license is valid for up to 3 months. Some rental companies accept a foreign license without an IDP, but carrying one is recommended.

Is Uber available throughout Saudi Arabia?

Uber and Careem are available in all major cities (Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Makkah, Madinah). In smaller cities and rural areas, Careem generally has better coverage. For remote destinations, renting a car is advisable.

How do I get from Jeddah airport to Makkah?

The Haramain High-Speed Train connects Jeddah Airport (KAEC station) to Makkah in about 25 minutes. Alternatively, taxis and ride-hailing services make the 80 km journey in about 1 hour. Shuttle buses are also available.

Are women allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia?

Yes. Women have been legally allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia since June 2018. Female tourists can rent cars and use their international driver's license just like male visitors.
