Day 1: Riyadh to Al-Ahsa — Highway 40 Desert Crossing & UNESCO Oasis

Depart Riyadh early morning on Highway 40 (also known as the Dammam Highway), the 400-kilometre corridor crossing the heart of the Arabian Peninsula. The first 300 kilometres are flat desert with surprisingly good road quality — the six-lane highway is well maintained with fuel stations every 50-80 kilometres. Keep your eyes open for camels near the road, especially in the early morning. After approximately 2.5 hours, exit at Al-Hofuf to enter Al-Ahsa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world's largest natural oasis covering over 85 square kilometres with 2.5 million date palms fed by natural artesian springs. Your first stop is Jabal Al-Qarah (Al-Qarah Mountain), where a network of naturally cool caves maintains temperatures around 20 degrees year-round, even when the desert surface hits 50 degrees in summer. Entry costs SAR 25 and the walkways through the cave system are well maintained with lighting. Next, visit Ibrahim Palace, an Ottoman-era fortress with a distinctive mosque dome that served as the regional governor's residence. Continue to a working date farm — Al-Ahsa produces over 100,000 tonnes annually including the premium Khalas variety prized across the Gulf. Several farms near the palace offer guided tours for SAR 30-50 including generous tasting of fresh and dried varieties. For lunch, seek traditional Hasawi cuisine: Hasawi red rice (a nutty grain grown only in this oasis) with slow-cooked lamb at a local restaurant (SAR 40-60). Spend the afternoon at the Al-Ahsa National Museum and the restored Al-Hofuf Old Town. Stay overnight in Al-Ahsa (SAR 150-350/night).

Day 2: Al-Ahsa to Dammam — Yellow Lake, Ithra & Khobar Corniche

Start early and drive 30 minutes southeast of Al-Hofuf to Yellow Lake (Al-Asfar Lake), a surreal body of water surrounded by sand dunes that glows golden in the early morning light. The lake is at its most photogenic at sunrise when the water reflects the warm sky. It is a popular camping spot for locals but nearly empty on weekday mornings. The lake's colour comes from high mineral content and algae — it shifts between yellow, green, and brown depending on the season. Allow 45 minutes for photography and exploration. Continue northeast on Highway 605 toward the Gulf coast, a drive of approximately 2 hours. Your destination is Dhahran, specifically the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra), the award-winning cultural landmark built by Saudi Aramco that resembles a stack of river stones. Ithra houses a contemporary art museum, science museum, theatre, cinema, and a library with over 200,000 volumes. Entry to permanent galleries is free, with special exhibitions from SAR 30-60. Allow 3 hours minimum — the science museum and contemporary art galleries are world-class. After Ithra, drive 15 minutes to Al-Khobar and walk the Khobar Corniche, a 5-kilometre waterfront promenade with views across the Arabian Gulf to the King Fahd Causeway connecting to Bahrain (visible on clear days). For dinner, Al-Sanbok restaurant on the Khobar waterfront serves arguably the best seafood in the Eastern Province — hamour grouper and jumbo prawns (mains SAR 70-140). Stay overnight in Dammam or Khobar (SAR 200-500/night).

Day 3: Half Moon Bay Beach Day & Dammam Heritage

Your final day is dedicated to the Eastern Province's coastline. Drive 25 kilometres south of Al-Khobar to Half Moon Bay (Khaleej Nisf Al-Qamar), a crescent-shaped bay offering calm, shallow turquoise waters perfect for swimming and kayaking. Beach resorts charge SAR 50-100 for day access with loungers and umbrellas, or the public stretches are free. The bay's gentle gradient makes it exceptionally safe for families and the water visibility is excellent in the morning hours before wind picks up. Bring snorkelling gear — the shallow reefs close to shore host colourful fish. Spend the morning swimming, kayaking (equipment rental SAR 50/hour), or simply relaxing on pristine white sand. After the beach, drive 20 minutes to Dammam for the Heritage Village and Dammam Corniche. The Heritage Village is a small but well-curated museum showcasing Eastern Province traditional life — pearl diving heritage, Bedouin camp reconstructions, and historic photographs of the pre-oil era. The Dammam Corniche stretches along the Gulf waterfront with playgrounds, food trucks, and evening entertainment. For a cultural addition, drive 15 minutes northeast to Tarut Island, one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the Arabian Peninsula with evidence of settlement dating back 5,000 years. The Tarut Castle ruins and traditional quarters are atmospheric. Farewell dinner at a seafood restaurant in Dammam before departing or flying out from King Fahd International Airport.
