Essential Preparations for a Saudi Desert Adventure
Permits & Guided Tours
Some regions, especially near borders or protected reserves, require official permits. Choose licensed operators who provide 4×4 vehicles, navigation experts, and full camp logistics. Guides also help interpret desert weather, identify wildlife, and introduce you to Bedouin culture. Always share your route with someone and carry a satellite GPS device.
Safety & Gear
Deserts swing between extreme heat and chilly nights. Pack:
Breathable long sleeves
Warm layers
Hat, scarf, sunscreen, sunglasses
Closed shoes for dune climbs
Carry at least 4 litres of water per day, electrolytes, and a first-aid kit. Your 4×4 should include a compressor, tow ropes, spare tyres, and recovery boards.
Responsible Travel
Saudi deserts host fragile ecosystems. Follow Leave No Trace guidelines, avoid driving over vegetation, and pack out all waste. Campfires belong only in designated pits. Always ask permission before photographing Bedouin camps or individuals.
